The urge to destroy is also a creative urge.
One of the requirements before the bike trip is that all riders must put in 8 hours of service on a local build project. So earlier this morning, I went out with Johnny Cagwin (he runs the track team bible study) and Pitt Habitat for Humanity to a project out in East Liberty. It's an old and decrepit church that a group is trying to rebuild.
Little known fun fact: 'demolition' actually falls into the same category as 'build project'. This morning was spent taking sledge hammers to walls, ripping down 2x4s, and in general making a huge mess of things. All this mess then had to be hauled out to a dumpster. It was a lot of fun, but also a lot of heavy lifting. I was exhausted afterwards, and went home and slept for 3 hours.
I'll probably make it out to this project again sometime this semester, and when I do I'll be sure to take some pictures and post them here.
By the way, the title of this post is a quote from Mikhail Bakunin. It's been on one of the white boards in the Physics Lounge for the past couple of days.
